PharPoint gives back to the community each month through our Working Together for Change campaign. Learn about Surfers Healing Charity, our sponsored non-profit for October.
At PharPoint Research, we find truth in the words of Anne Frank: “How wonderful that no one need wait a single moment to improve the world.” For that reason, we’ve initiated a company-wide outreach campaign called Working Together for Change. Each month, we select a local non-profit organization to promote and support through raising funds and spreading awareness. If ever there was an organization that was improving the world, it’s Surfers Healing charity in Wrightsville Beach – and for that reason, PharPoint has selected them as our charity for the month of October![bctt tweet=”“How wonderful that no one need wait a single moment to improve the world.””]
Surfers Healing Charity Surf Camps: Humble Beginnings, Widespread Impact
Surfers Healing is a non-profit organization based out of San Juan Capistrano, California, with one mission: “to enrich the lives of people living with autism by exposing them to the unique experience of surfing”. Surfers Healing hosts surf camps free of charge, and travels across the United States and beyond to spread joy and excitement to children with autism and their families.
While the organization now has chapters throughout the country, the story originated with one child: Isaiah, the son of co-founders Danielle and Israel “Izzy” Paskowitz. After Izzy observed how therapeutic the ocean was for Isaiah, who suffers from sensory overload, and delighted in the newfound connection he had with his son, the Paskowitz family organized a surf camp to bring the same experience to other children and families. This gave birth to Surfers Healing, the original surf camp for autistic children. That was fifteen years ago; today, there are Surfers Healing charity surf camps in over 20 locations across the world.
For those who experience sensory overload, the rhythmic motion of the waves and riding them in and out can offer a great sense of relief. Each camp gives children the opportunity to surf alongside an experienced instructor. These day-long camps have an average of 4,500+ participants each year, and are staffed entirely by volunteers. Surfers Healing’s biggest goal is this: to bring each child living with autism One Perfect Day at the beach.
PharPoint has personal ties to Surfers Healing! Michelle Morcos, a Senior Database Programmer at our Wilmington, NC office, has participated in a Surfers Healing charity surf camp in Wrightsville Beach with her son, Cole. In her own words:
“This was our first year attending Surfers Healing Wrightsville Beach so we weren’t sure what to expect. It turned out to be an amazing day filled with love and acceptance (and fun!) for so many families affected by autism and is one we will remember forever. The outpouring of support from the community sponsors and volunteers was remarkable.
Parents of kids on the spectrum are constantly being reminded what their children can’t do – so it is awesome to see what they can do. The confidence and pure happiness on the faces of the kids riding the waves was contagious. I have never seen my son Cole smile so willingly for pictures! As Surfers Healing likes to say, it truly was “One Perfect Day.”
For these reasons and many more, PharPoint is proud to support Surfers Healing charity camps for the month of October. If you’d like to help us contribute to Surfers Healing, check out their website here or the Wrightsville Beach chapter here.
