It’s never too late to learn new things, grow your skillset, and take on new challenges. In this month’s Meet the Team spotlight, we spoke with PharPoint’s Meg D. to learn more about her career journey from graphic design to finance.
As Accounts Receivable Manager at PharPoint, Meg is responsible for creating invoices, managing communications with clients, and processing payments – but her early career looked much different.
With a Master’s degree in Graphic Design, the first 10 years of Meg’s professional career involved working in photography and design, with projects including helping build out the original website for Yellow Pages. In 2000, after moving North Carolina for a new role, Meg met her now-husband, eventually leading to her first career pivot: from full-time designer to full-time mother to a growing family of three children.
As her family grew, Meg made the decision to move back into the office. Rather than returning to the design industry, she chose to pivot into finance, returning to school to pursue an accounting degree.
“I remember in high school that I had taken an accounting class, and I really liked it. So, I was like, well, maybe I’ll just try that.”
During her four year stint back in college, Meg began her first position in a new industry as a bookkeeper while balancing classes. In 2019, Meg joined PharPoint. In her 5+ years with the company, Meg has continued to learn and grow with support from her manager and colleagues.
“It’s one of the many benefits of a smaller company,” she shares with us. “You have the opportunity to grow much quicker.”
Meg appreciates working at PharPoint, especially the supportive environment and close-knit team. “I appreciate my manager and all my colleagues,” she says. “We’ve grown so much in the past five years, and despite challenges like COVID, we’ve remained a tight-knit group. I love the difference we make in the world as a clinical research company.”
As her children prepare to leave for college, Meg is looking forward to new adventures, whether it’s picking up hobbies like stained glass and mosaic art. She’s also committed to staying active, doing high-intensity interval training (HIIT) five days a week. “I’ve been attending HIIT classes for eight years now. It’s so important to me and it’s been a game changer for my health.”
Looking back, Meg is proud of returning to school in her early 40s to pursue accounting.
“I’m very proud of myself for making the move to do something so late in my career,” she shares. “Part of me thought, am I too old? Time had passed, but I decided to do that and I am glad I did.”
